Abimbola Owoade Crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo Amidst Royal Grandeur and Dignitaries’ Presence

The historic city of Oyo came alive today as Abimbola Owoade was crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The coronation ceremony, held at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, was attended by a high-profile gathering of traditional rulers, political leaders, and cultural enthusiasts. The event was led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who had earlier presented Oba Owoade with the staff and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Among the dignitaries present were the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams.
The atmosphere was festive as drummers, dancers, and traditional performers showcased the rich heritage of the Oyo Empire, welcoming the new monarch who has completed all necessary rites, including the 21-day traditional Oro Ipebi, which ended on March 29, 2025.
Ahead of the coronation, security was intensified across Oyo town and its surrounding areas, with operatives deployed at strategic locations by the Oyo State Government to ensure a peaceful celebration.
Oba Abimbola Owoade now ascends the revered throne of the Alaafin, continuing a lineage of rulers in one of the most historically significant monarchies in Yorubaland. His ascension marks a new era for the Oyo Kingdom, which is known for its cultural influence and leadership in Yoruba affairs.
As Oyo begins this new chapter, expectations are high for the young monarch to sustain the legacy of his predecessor while navigating the modern challenges of traditional leadership.
