Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek, the Rain Maker is dead! Majek Fashek is a Nigerian musician, songwriter and guitarist. He became famous for the Prisoner of Conscience album he released in 1988. The album included the track “Send Down the Rain” which won multiple awards across the globe.

Majek Fashek was labelled a prophet as the song, SEND DOWN THE RAIN allegedly brought down thunderous rain and ended one of the worst draughts in Nigeria in 1987. He went on to become Africa’s biggest reggae superstar in the late 80s and early 90s.

Majek Fashek was born in Benin City on February 6, 1949 according to Wikipedia. As a youngster, Majek played Maracas during traditional ceremonies in Benin where Olokun rhythms were used to accompany the worship of the river goddess.

Fashek’s musical influences include Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and Fela Kuti. He learned to play the trumpet and guitar whilst composing songs for his local church choir in Benin.

He joined a band called Jah Stix in the early 80s before going solo to release multiple albums for record labels that included Interscope Records and Island Records.

Majekekodumi  whose last name Fasheke (Ifa-kii-she-eke) means “high priest who does not lie”, “powers of miracles” will live on forever through his music.
