Recession Hits AMVCA 2017: No Free Hotel Rooms for Nominees

Appears the stars will have to come from home for this year’s ceremony

The times are hard and no one is exempted from the realities of a recession, not even Africa Magic, apparently.

The organisers of AMVCAs have announced the commencement of sales of VIP tickets to this year’s award show, which is slated for a yet-to-be-announced date.

This is the first time in the history of the five-year-old awards that tickets will be sold. Interested attendees will have to cough out one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) for a VIP ticket to the event.

When it birthed in 2012, the AMVCA changed the face of awards organisation in Nigeria. From exquisite invitation items, to gifts for nominees upon arrival at Eko Hotel where they were lodged, to a cocktail on the day of arrival, to rehearsals on the morning of the show.

With AMAA Awards being the quintessentially disorganised event that it has come to be known for, the AMVCA was seen as a breath of fresh air.

Unconfirmed reports reaching us suggest that there will be no hotel accommodation for nominees at AMVCA 2017.

Usually, nominees are moved into rooms at the Eko Hotel venue of the award on Friday, a day before the awards and will leave on Sunday morning after the awards. This was to ensure that nominees could attend the cocktail event on Friday evening, rehearsals on Saturday morning and arrival early for the awards proper.

All of this may now be in jeopardy due to these changes.

It is unconfirmed at this moment if the cocktail even will hold.
