Twitter Unban: SDNON Hails President Buhari
The Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria, SDNON, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for reopening twitter operations in Nigeria, following the former’s independence day national broadcast.
The organization whose members are drawn from different news organizations in Nigeria expressed joy over the President’s decision to unban Twitter users from accessing the micro-blogging site, which was blocked since June.
President of SDNON, Otunba Femi Davies in a statement praised President Muhammadu Buhari for listening to the voice of Nigerians, particularly youths, and for being magnanimous in his approach towards freedom of speech in the country.
“Twitter has been the voice of the people in Nigeria… It is actually where we held the government accountable for their actions. It has also served as a major tool for journalists in gathering news stories around the world. This new development has shown that the President is aware of happenings around him and we as a body will continue to work in tune with his administration”.
According to NOIPolls, a public opinion and research organization, it stated that no fewer than 39 million Nigerians have access to Twitter.
It would be recalled that, on June 5, 2021, the Federal government of Nigeria officially put an indefinite ban on Twitter, restricting its operation in Nigeria after the social media platform deleted tweets made by the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari warning the Southeastern people of Nigeria, predominantly Igbo People, of a potential repeat of the 1967 Biafran Civil War due to the ongoing insurgency in that part of Nigeria.
