Unknown Gunmen Attack Journalist, Olufemi Oyewole At His Residence Days After President Buhari’s Inauguration
A few days after the inauguration of the newly elected Nigeria’s leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, unknown gunmen stormed the residence of international journalist, Mr. Olufemi Oyewole, in the wee hours of June 1 2015.
Olufemi who is the country Correspondence/representative of Ben TV, a United Kingdom based television station, while narrating his ordeal in the hands of the assailants to the men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) that visited his residence noted that the unknown gunmen visited his house based on information gathered on him.
The media guru asserted that the assailants have all information about him which includes his foreign trips, family and his several news reports.
“They arrived midnight, we were far asleep, the man woke me up with his gun, at the same time, I heard another voice on the other side of the bed telling my wife, Modupe, to get up gently and move towards my side,” Oyewole said.
He explained further that: “The leader of the gang told me categorically that I worked in favour of the APC in the just concluded election, that my reports have critically shown that. Then I was hearing my kids screaming in their room, I already gave up and accepted my faith, I thought it was my end.”
“He told me that no reason to let me remain alive because if I’m alive, I will still have the mind to write another news story in the future. The other one asked my wife to stand up, he asked her where is our ATM cards, where are my wife’s pieces of jewellery, where do we keep our foreign currencies left from our last foreign trip, then I now knew they have information about me when they mentioned our last foreign trip.”
Oyewole is just one of the African journalists that have suffered the fate of the profession within the last few years.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident to journalists during the parade of robbery suspects at the Command on Thursday, explained that investigation on the unknown gunmen is ongoing.
“Our mission is to eradicate armed robbery attacks and killings in Lagos State, the arrested and paraded armed robbers will assist us in apprehending others who are at large and possibly lead us to those who attacked the residence of BEN TV journalist, Femi Oyewole ‘male’ ,” Nwosu said.
